Thriving Through Quality Education
Chloe, a young student in our area, struggled with learning disabilities and faced a lack of resources to help her succeed in school. Her grandmother turned to the Boys and Girls Club’s tailored tutoring program and watched Chloe progress from risking grade-level retention to reading four books a week. Chloe’s improvement means she can transition from being pulled out of the classroom by specialists to being included alongside her peers. With United Way’s support, the Boys and Girls Club can continue uplifting families like Chloe’s and help more children achieve their academic goals.

NourishNC Fills Food Needs for Children
United Way of the Cape Fear Area works with our community to leverage resources and improve the lives of local people. UWCFA is so proud to partner with Nourish NC, whose mission is to ensure children in New Hanover County are provided healthy food, empowering them to succeed in the classroom and in their community. Through program funding for staff at Nourish NC by UWCFA, “Farmers MarKID” is a direct and hands on approach to improving the health of children in our community. Free fresh fruits and vegetables are brought to parks, playgrounds, after school programs, high need schools, and other nonprofits such as Boys & Girls Clubs and Communities in Schools. Children receive “Nourish Bucks” to taste, and shop for farm fresh produce. Each child receives 5-15 pounds of produce and a healthy recipe book so they can prepare the food at home with their family. Just mix 1 part fresh food, 1 part education, 1 part fun and you have the MarKID!
