Harris Teeter Teams Mobilize to Address Urgent Needs in Western North Carolina

Matthews, North Carolina-based grocery retailer donates two truckloads of water, food boxes and $250,000 to MANNA Food Bank

MATTHEWS, N.C. (Oct. 4, 2024) – In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Harris Teeter mobilized its teams to provide critical on-the-ground support, monetary donations and essential supplies to Western North Carolina communities and the MANNA Food Bank.

Harris Teeter’s donation today of $250,000 will go directly to the MANNA Food Bank, along with two truckloads of drinking water and two truckloads of emergency food boxes with ready to eat items. The food boxes will provide nearly 40,000 meals.

The Asheville-based MANNA Food Bank serves 160,000 people every month in Western North Carolina and is in desperate need of supplies after their warehouse on Swannanoa River Road was destroyed by the hurricane. The food bank has set up a temporary location at the Western North Carolina Farmers Market in Asheville to distribute food and water to people impacted by the hurricane.

Harris Teeter’s donation addresses the immediate disaster relief needs and also supports the long-term need to replenish the food bank’s supply and rebuild their facility.

“North Carolina is our home, and Harris Teeter is committed to serving our neighbors, our associates and our communities directly impacted by this hurricane,” said Danna Robinson, director of corporate affairs for Harris Teeter. "It's crucial for us to have boots on the ground to support where possible and continue to provide as our community rebuilds over the coming weeks and months.”

Harris Teeter mobilized resources to deliver and distribute water and ice to impacted areas. Since Saturday, Harris Teeter has transported more than a dozen truckloads of ice and water, totaling more than 550,000 pounds to the Asheville, Boone, Greenville, and Greer communities. Harris Teeter also made a product donation to several area hospitals.

Harris Teeter would like to thank its dedicated and valued associates, who are tirelessly working to support their neighbors in times of need by keeping stores open and stocked, as we know feeding families is an integral part of disaster relief efforts. To support our associates, Harris Teeter has provided emergency food boxes, water, cleaning supplies, clothes, other resources and more, all aimed at helping associates during this challenging time.

Harris Teeter also supports associates through Harris Teeter’s internal foundation that provides financial assistance to those impacted by situations like the recent storms.

“We are deeply grateful to our associates. As they assist their neighbors in need, Harris Teeter remains dedicated to supporting them every step of the way,” said Robinson.

Harris Teeter invites the public to help with their relief efforts through its in-store Round Up campaign. Through Oct. 28, 100% of Round Up funds will directly support the American Red Cross efforts to help people across the path of the hurricane.
