Family Owned Wineries

Villa Antinori Toscana Rosso

As the 25th generation of the family, Marchese Antinori has spent his lifetime synthesizing the collective wisdom of his forebears and applying it to the modern era. In the 1970s he revitalized his family’s winery in Tuscany, introducing modern winemaking techniques as well as two new non-traditional red wine blends—Tignanello and Solaia. These landmark wines created the new category known as the Super Tuscan and revitalized the Tuscan wine industry. His passion and vision inspired his fellow vintners of the region to join him in the pursuit of exceptional wines. Ruby red in color, the nose is intense, intriguing and presents fruity notes of black cherries and plum jam with hints of boxwood, tobacco, and vanilla. The palate is filling with supple, velvety tannins sustained by outstanding freshness and pleasant savoriness.

Barone Fini Pinot Grigio

Cultivating vineyards has been a family business since 1497 when two noble Venetian families united in marriage and began producing wine in northeastern Italy. Today, the Bonmartini-Fini family continues to manage this venerable property and produce DOC wines of the highest quality. The expressive nose features floral and lemon notes. Round fruit fills the mouth with juicy flavors of honeydew melon and ripe apples. Bright acidity balanced by a warm minerality creates a lingering, crisp finish.

Educated Guess Cabernet Sauvignon

No wealthy family, or big name to get his foot in the door, it all had to be done through hard work, tenacity, efficiency, and creative financing. Since no bank would lend him enough money, and having little savings of his own, the founder and proprietor, Mark Albrecht, sold his house and everything inside of it in order to get the capital to start the business. Now 20 years later Educated Guess is a top three producer in the Napa Valley and has one the best selling, highly acclaimed cabernets in the US.

Hess Select Cabernet Sauvignon

A pioneer by nature, Donald Hess was determined to defy convention and pursue winemaking at elevation. In 1978, he established The Hess Collection Winery on the site of one of the region’s oldest wineries on Mount Veeder. Although few in Napa Valley were cultivating vines at elevation, Donald Hess believed the volcanic slopes of Mount Veeder provided the ideal combination of soils and microclimates to yield elegant wines with rich, complex flavors. On the nose, this Cabernet Sauvignon presents vivid aromas of red cherry and blackberry accented by notes of warm cedar. I love the big, rich entry on this wine, as mouthfilling tannins deliver complex layers of black fruit, notably blackberry and black plum, with hints of roasted vanilla and mocha on the soft, round finish.

Boen Tri-Appellation Pinot Noir

Joe Wagner, a fifth-generation Napa Valley winemaker and son of Chuck Wagner, co-founder of Caymus Vineyards, joined the family business at 19, initially focusing on Pinot Noir. In 2001, he founded Belle Glos, and in 2006, he disrupted the industry with Meiomi Pinot Noir, which became the largest non-asset wine sale in history just nine years later. In 2014, Joe launched Copper Cane, his own wine company, and also owns the Quilt & Co tasting room in downtown Napa. Looking ahead, he is preparing to introduce a new craft spirit portfolio set to launch nationally. The Boen Tri-Appellation Pinot Noir boasts notes of dark cherry, raspberry, vanilla, black currants, and crushed violet. Pair this wine with grilled skirt steak, peppered roasted pork tenderloin, or classic spaghetti and meatballs.
