Smart Fun in the Sun
Fun in the SunThe Basics of Being "Sun Smart"

Whether you’re lounging on the beach, taking a family walk around the neighborhood, working in the yard or hiking in the mountains, summer is a great time to be outdoors. The summer sun feels great on our skin but can also damage it, so let’s review the basics of being “sun smart,” with a special emphasis on protecting your skin and eyes from the sun’s damaging UV rays.

Here are my top 5 Fun in the Sun Health Habits:
Top 5 Fun in the Sun Health Habits
  • Avoid sun exposure at least between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

  • Make wearing sun block or sunscreen a morning ritual, just like brushing your teeth, since you never know when you might find yourself outdoors for an extended period of time. Apply sun block or sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day over all exposed areas and at least 30 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply frequently even if you’re indoors, on average every two hours. I prefer products that contain titanium or zinc dioxide as these agents appear to be both effective and safe. Get a new bottle once the expiration date has passed.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sun-protective clothing (specialized products are available but at least wear clothing with a tight weave).Make sure your kids are following Smart Fun in the Sun Health Habits

  • Wear good quality sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

  • Make sure your kids are following these guidelines, too, since experts believe it’s the sun exposure accumulated during our early years that plays the biggest role in risk for skin cancer, wrinkles and age spots.

Schedule a yearly "skin checkup"

It’s a good idea, too, for adults to schedule a yearly “skin checkup” with your dermatologist to make sure no unusual looking spots have developed, especially in places you can’t easily see, like your back. One other thing - keep adequate hydration in mind. Start your day with a big glass of water, and keep a clean supply of water nearby throughout the day so you can replace fluids lost during exercise and time in the sun.

Summer should be a joyous time for the entire family, and following the tips outlined above can help make it so.

Be well.
