February's Winner - Susan Harrell
1st Grade Teacher
Wrightsville Beach Elementary
Mrs. Harrell is deserving of the Teachers of Excellence award because of her continued dedication to her students. Mrs. Harrell has been teaching at Wrightsville Beach Elementary since 2001 and has been in the teaching field since 1982. She has worked hard to keep up with the changes in technology to be sure she is offering the very best opportunities to her student and their parents. She has been trained to use the system called PALM, which helps her assess her students' progress throughout the year. Mrs. Harrell has also been trained on how to electronically create report cards and inform parents of the nine week progress. This process helps the parents be more involved in their child’s progress.
Mrs. Harrell has received compliment after compliment on her teaching abilities. Assistant Principal Harry P. Mayer said, "Mrs. Harrell has established a supportive classroom where students are encouraged to 'take chances' and are invited to be engaged and responsible for their learning." Pansy Rumley, Principal wrote on her observation, "Mrs. Harrell is an exemplary teacher!". |
January's Winner - Susan Parker
English Teacher
Central Cabarrus High School
Mrs. Parker was selected as our January Teachers of Excellence winner, because of her devotion to improving our education system. She has been teaching English to the students at Central Cabarrus High School for 7 years. Susan has worked extremely hard to build relationships between her parents and students.
Over the last several years Susan has immersed herself in the history of the Holocaust. She has been giving the opportunity to attend several conferences and classes. The knowledge that she has gained from attending such sessions has been of great benefit to her and her students. She was able to write a curriculum for Cabarrus County Schools as well initiate and instruct the first Holocaust and Genocide courses. We received many articles and stories about how wonderful Susan Parker is at being a teacher and a mentor. This is exactly what Harris Teeter is looking for, that is why she is being honored as our Teacher of Excellence. |
November's Winner - Carol Claypool
First Grade Teacher
Gold Hill Elementary
Ms. Claypool is deserving of the Teachers of Excellence award because of her devotion to the first graders and other teachers she encounters through teaching. Carol creates a student-centered atmosphere in her classroom. Principal Brewer explained Carol’s teaching method by explaining that she treats each child as a gift given to her for a year. She discovers the child’s developmental needs not only academically but she also helps them develop by paying attention to their behavior, emotions and all their abilities. Each year she hopes to create a support system for each student by creating a connection between their home and school. The attention she gives to each student makes Carol excel as a teacher.
One of the biggest adventures that Ms. Claypool has taken on is actually outside the walls of Gold Hill Elementary. She has started an Education Convention in Haiti where she is training teachers to incorporate the use of learning styles. A few of the teachers from Gold Hill joined Carol on her trip to Haiti and the entire school helped by collecting personal items for children and teaching supplies for the classrooms. In the explanation of why Carol directed this convention she explained that she wanted to give back in her community and abroad so everyone has a chance to give back by teaching. |
October's Winner - Mark Moore
Principal Designee
Brooks Global
Mr. Moore is deserving of the Teachers of Excellence award because of his continued dedication to his students. During his 29 years of teaching, he has spent 6 years at Brooks Global and currently serves as a "Principal Designee" for the school. He has received various awards during his teaching career and Harris Teeter is proud to add another award to that list. Mark Moore is more than just a teacher. He makes the subjects fun for the students and uses real life situations so the students can learn more than what is needed for a test and relate it to their surroundings.
Mark also advises the Student Council in which he creates many community service projects for the students. "Pennies for Patients" and “Salvation Army Kans for Kids” are just a couple of the service projects that the school has participated in during Mr. Moore’s time as advisor. Harris Teeter noticied how the community is very appreciative of Brooks Global’s participation in canned food drives or working with the Luekemia and Lymphoma Society as we read multiple thank you notes from the organizations who benefited from the giving. Congratulations to Mark Moore, the October Teachers of Excellence Award Winner. |
