This is America. We pride ourselves on being the best.
But there are some things we're simply not the best at - including health and wellness.
We enjoy a terrific system of health care in this country - but it's not the best in the world.
We enjoy a terrific standard of living in this country - but it's not the best in the world.
We in this country have a good chance of living long, healthy lives - but we're not at the top of the list.
In fact, not even close.
A new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) shows just how far we need to go...
Comparing various health measures across 17 high-income countries including the US, Europe, Canada and Australia we did not fare well at all - in fact, we are last in life expectacy for men and second to last in life expectancy for women.
How is that possible????!
The authors of the report state there are multiple possible reasons behind the numbers, including:
- how much and the types of food we eat
- high rates of drunk driving and violent crime
- heavy community reliance upon automobiles (less walking)
- high poverty rates
These statistics are sobering, to be sure - but you do not have to contribute to these unhappy results - on a community level you can help by supporting those in need and promoting safety measures.
And on a personal level, you can take good care of your self.
