Shingles Vaccine Follow-up - What If You've Already Had Shingles?
Created on 5/4/2012
J sent in an excellent question as follow-up to the recent blog posting on the shingles vaccine. J is a young woman who has already had shingles (herpes zoster), and she asks whether the vaccine is still recommended for people if they have experienced shingles before - a very good question.
According to the web site for the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (http://www.nfid.org/idinfo/shingles/Shingles-Information-for-the-Media-2/media-faq.html), it is unusual for someone who has had shingles to experience another bout of this painful disorder. Thank goodness!
But should you get the shingles vaccine around age 60 years if you've already had shingles?
At present the answer is yes, provided you do not have a significant immune system deficiency.
I hope this helps, J. Thank you for your question, and be well.
