Dr Russ Blog - Relax and Breathe
Relax and Breathe
Created on 12/17/2010
Aah, the holidays... Family, volunteer work, parties, worship services, food, presents - and stress!
Everyone has stress in their lives, but the key is developing adequate means to manage stress so as not to suffer health consequences. Though we may experience stress throughout the year many of us are particularly stressed out by the holiday season and all that needs to get done.
Relax...Take a breath...
No, really - take a breath.
Breath work is perhaps the most efficient way to help lower your stress level. You might simply focus on your breath for a few minutes, noticing how quickly or slowly you are breathing, and how shallow or deeply. Or you might simply close your eyes and do some deep breathing.
Another option is to practice a good breathing exercise with me by video. There are many informative videos present on the Harris Teeter web site, and one of them features me doing the 4-7-8 relaxing breath exercise. This technique takes about 90 seconds to complete, and you're likely to feel much better after doing it. Just look under yourwellness videos to practice the exercise with me.
While you're there check out other yourwellness videos and maybe a few yourwellness recipes being prepared on screen by some very talented chefs.
During challenging moments I've heard people advise others to "just keep breathing." I couldn't agree more. Breath work can help you enjoy the holiday season to its fullest.
Happy Holidays! Be well.
