Dr Russ Blog - Produce - Fresh or Frozen?
Produce - Fresh or Frozen?
Created on 7/19/2013
P sent in a question most of us have posed at one time or another -
Are frozen fruits and vegetables as good for us as fresh produce?
A really good question and, generally speaking, the answer is yes.
Okay, in a perfect world we'd all be cooking with and eating produce freshly plucked from our backyard gardens - but most of us have not yet reached that level of perfection!
The good news with respect to frozen fruits and vegetables is that they are picked when they're ripe and then quickly frozen so that most, if not all, of the nutrients remain present, especially when talking about intact frozen fruit such as berries.
More good news - you can get specific types of produce that you enjoy out of season if you choose frozen varieties, many of them organic. In addition, frozen varieties sometimes cost a little less.
Fresh is great when it comes to seasonal vegetables and fruits, but so is frozen.
Thanks for a really good question, P.
