Prevent Type 2 Diabetes - Eat Fruit?
Created on 9/4/2013
Messages about eating fruit and health can be confusing.
We know that fruits contain a variety of nutrients that can be good for us, that we should eat a variety of brightly colored fruits, and that they taste really good!
We also know that fruits contain sugar.
Keep in mind that sugar is not "evil" - sugar / glucose is the primary energy source for all cells of the body. It's just that we don't want to be eating too much sugar (in fact, too much of anything!) - especially in the form of added sugar and highly processed snacks or desserts (enjoy them in moderatoin...).
So, what to make of fruits?
Results from a recent study out of the prestigious British Medical Journal suggest that eating some fruits may actually help PREVENT type 2 diabates. The fruits to eat more of include:
Grapefruit (speak with your doctor / pharmacist frist if you are taking prescription medication - grapefruit juice may interefere with some medications)
Any words of caution? Yes - drinking lots of fruit juice was associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
If you have or are at risk for type 2 diabetes speak with your doctor or dietitian about which fruits you should be eating and how often. And everyone should probably focus a little more on the fruits listed above while occasionally enjoying other fruits as well.
Aim for 2-4 servings of fresh or frozen fruit every day.
