Dr Russ Blog - New Year’s Resolution? Keep It Simple
New Year’s Resolution? Keep It Simple
Created on 12/17/2009
New Year’s resolutions – every year we make them, and for most of us we’re failing to hold to those same resolutions within a few weeks!
Why?
Well, in part because we set our expectations unreasonably high and suddenly “life” gets in the way.
There’s a better way.
Consider something that you’d like to improve in your life – maybe it’s your work / family life balance, your body weight, or your exercise regimen.
Envision your ultimate goal. Now take it down a few notches, maybe even a lot of notches, to a reasonable short-term goal you can attain with modest effort, yet a maximal sense of satisfaction.
Once you reach this goal you can set a new one a little farther down the road towards reaching your ultimate goal, and so on until that ultimate goal is within your grasp.
You may not reach that ultimate goal in January, in fact you likely won’t, and you may not even reach it in February or March. But small successes add up to big successes, and if you set your sights on reaching a few reasonably set goals over a period of time, you’ll likely look back on a significant accomplishment you’ve achieved, and with a well-deserved sense of pride in your self.
So start out this New Year’s with kindness – towards your self, and keep those resolutions within easy reach.
And be well.
