HCG for Weight Loss?
Created on 1/13/2012
Human chorionic gonadotropin - now that's a mouthful!
Speaking of mouthful, some medical people are out there pushing the use of HCG, as this compound is also known, for weight loss. And popular interest in HCG continues to grow.
But the question is, should YOU be interested in it?
HCG is a hormone that has many actions in women during pregnancy. Researchers in the 1970-80's began looking into the potential for weight and fat loss actions of HCG. Over the years a number of studies have been performed and, according to a recent review written by David Keifer, MD only one had positive results.
Plus, the weight loss programs that employ HCG usually recommend a very low calorie diet - on the order of only 500 calories a day - thus, people might lose weight simply because they're taking in so few calories. Keep in mind, however, that you can get sick from consistently taking in so few calories.
HCG is often given as a shot, but more recently homeopathic forms of HCG have made their way onto the market. Homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe but effectiveness is another question.
We are inundated with marketing material every day - whether it's TV, the radio, print ads or sidebars on the Internet we are barraged with information designed to get us to, well, buy. When it comes to health products it is very important to:
1) take marketing information with a grain of salt
2) ask your doctor and pharmacists for their opinions, and
3) keep in mind that if it seems like a quick fix to a complicated problem it may well be too good to be true.
If you need to lose weight to improve your health the best method is not very exciting (diet and exercise) and often not very easy - but there's no doubting the effectiveness of the approach. Marketers like to tempt us with the idea that "it's easy" - no matter what the problem is!
It's rarely "easy," and there's rarely a quick fix.
When it comes to weight loss, can you do it?
Yes, you can.
Might you need some help along the way?
Sure - and healing occurs in community.
Does the "answer" come in a pill?
Usually not. More often the answer comes from somewhere inside yourself. Trust in your body's healing capacity, support it through a healthy diet and regular exercise, be kind to yourself...
And be well.
