Grilling for Taste - and Good Health!
Created on 8/30/2013

The cry has already started - "Fire up the grill!" Women and men across the land are gathering their tools, cleaning the grill and firing it up in preparation for the creation of a delicious meal over this Labor Day weekend. Most everyone enjoys grilling out - and for good reasons. Cooking on the grill is fun, often invites the participation of friends and family, and helps create food that is out-of-this-world delicious. And you can make these dishes even healthier in just 3 easy, but important steps. I'm not meaning to dampen enthusiasm for the BBQ at all - it's just that when juices drop into the flames or heating elements of our grills causing a flame-up, or when we eat charred portions of animal protein we're not doing ourselves any health favors. Make your grilling that much better for everyone by following these easy tips: - Marinate - marinades usually contain ingredients such as vinegar, spices and citrus which help prevent the production of harmful compiunds within meat when grilled - and all you need to do to get health benefits is marinade meat for 30 minutes prior to putting on the grill. By the way - you don't need to worry about marinading vegetables or fruits. - If it's charred don't eat it - I know it tastes good but it's not good for us. - Dry it out just a little - place the meat in your microwave oven for 30-60 seconds at moderate temperature to dry out the cut a little - this helps prevent flame-ups. The 3 simple steps outlined above take almost no time and provide an added way to enjoy this weekend's barbecue - by making certain it's not only delicious food that you're cooking, but it's healthier, too! Happy holiday to everyone! Be well.
