Do You Need to Take Supplements?
Created on 7/13/2012
Vitamins, supplements, and herbs - it seems everyone is taking something in order to optimize their health.
But does everyone need to take a dietary supplement?
In a perfect world the answer would be no - because in a perfect world we'd all be eating a perfectly healthy diet that contains a perfect amount of nutrients that also tastes perfectly good.
As you can see, we don't live in a perfect world.
So, what to do?
Do your best to eat a varied, healthy and satisfying diet that emphasizes fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit, whole grains, healthy protein and fat sources, and with some not so healthy splurges built in on occasion for pure enjoyment.
And then consider a small number of supplements in consultation with your doctor. Things you might think about taking -
- a multivitamin - it doesn't take the place of eating healthy foods, but a good one can help prevent nutritional deficiencies when we're not eating as well as we should
- fish oil - the omega-3s in fish oils help decrease inflammation, improve moods and may help prevent and treat certain chronic illnesses
- vitamin D - you get some from being out in the sun, but many people have low levels of vitamin D because we're inside so much of the day
Do you have to take these things? No, supplementation is a choice, one to be talked over with your doctor(s).
But they can be a part of an overall healthy lifestyle.
