Diet Sodas and Stroke?

Heart disease and stroke are often spoken about together under the title of cardiovascular disease. You're likely aware of the research suggesting how best to eat to prevent cardiovascular disease, that being essentially a Mediterranean-style diet that emphasizes:
- a wide variety of brightly colored vegetables and fruit
- whole grains
- cold water fish high in omega-3 fatty acids
- extra virgin olive oil
- small servings of lean meats
- some plant-based protein in the form of beans and perhaps soy
- nuts and seeds
- clean water and unsweetened tea as beverages
The good news there is that a Mediterranean diet tastes really good...
But a lot of folks like other things, too, and in this day and age where weight management is a significant concern many have turned to diet drinks. It might seem a reasonable choice at first glance - you get to drink something you enjoy the taste of and get fewer calories, too.
But some studies suggest that specific artificial sweeteners often found in diet drinks may increase the desire for sweets in our brains.
And now comes data from the Northern Manhattan Study, just presented at the International Stroke Conference, that suggests an association between diet soda drinking and stroke.
NAGT (Not A Good Thing).
Let's be clear - the research suggests an association between diet soda intake and the risk of stroke - it does not definitively prove that diet sodas cause strokes. But the researchers did take into account other factors such as body weight and other health issues, and even then the results suggested increased risk from diet sodas.
More research is needed and will be done. In the meantime, do your best to stick mainly with fresh, clean water and unsweetened tea (maybe green) to help stay optimize your health.
And by the way, another finding of the study? High salt intake increases the risk of stroke.
