Dr Russ Blog - Considering GMOs
Created on 5/9/2014
D sent in an excellent question about GMOs, or genetically modified foods. Specifically, D wanted to know Harris Teeter's position on GMOs.
Genetic modification of foods is a complex topic and the subject of great debate.
On the one hand, the process may help farmers raise crops more efficiently and feed more people;
on the other hand, research is ongoing into the safety of eating genetically modified foods.
Fortunately, no significant safety issues have yet been identified with respect to human consumption of genetically modified foods.
Harris Teeter believes the public should have access to unbiased scientific information about biotechnology and genetically modified foods.
Harris Teeter also follows all labeling guidelines put forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA,) including but not limited to GMOs, and will always comply with federal, state and local regulations in this regard.
The Company believes that consumers have the basic right to know the relevant information about the products they purchase, and supports the role and responsibility of FDA to determine appropriate food labeling. Harris Teeter will contine to look to both the USDA and FDA to provide guidance on matters related to quality of our nation's food supply that is also dependent on science and will continue to monitor conversations related to genetically engineered foods as well.
Thank you for a timely and important question, D.
