Dr Russ Blog - 7 Minutes A Day to Good Health?
7 Minutes A Day to Good Health?
Created on 5/28/2013

What if you could get most, if not all, the health benefits you need from exercise in a time frame of 7 minutes? Sounds too good to be true, right? And yet, a relatively new study supports previous data that high intensity exercise, when performed in short bursts and for short periods of time, can provide significant health benefits. How short a period of time? 7 minutes. You read that right. You can read the entire research article here (http://journals.lww.com/acsm-healthfitness/Fulltext/2013/05000/HIGH_INTENSITY_CIRCUIT_TRAINING_USING_BODY_WEIGHT_.5.aspx) and a nice piece in the NY Times about the research here (http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/09/the-scientific-7-minute-workout/). Some more good news about the program - you don't need weights. Now for some challenging news - you have to really exert yourself to get the benefits. So, first things first, make sure your doctor gives you the "okay" to participate in such a fitness program before starting. The idea is to participate in a series of 12 exercises, each performed for 40 seconds with a 10 second break in between. Doesn't sound too bad, right? But you should reach an intensity level of 8 out of 10 during each 40-second exercise. Oooooh... This looks like a very good program for folks in relatively good shape, and could be modifed for those of us who need to get back in shape. Think about trying it - but talk with your doctor first. Be well.
