AGEs and Aging

AGEs, in this instance, stands for Advanced Glycation Endproducts, but they can have an impact on how well we age.

AGEs are formed by the body in small amounts but are also found in food, especially food cooked under "dry" conditions (for example grilling, broiling and frying). When present in high concentrations AGEs contribute to the development of chronic illness.

The good news? Whole grains, vegetables and fruits are low in AGEs, and the concentration of AGEs in animal protein can be reduced significantly simply by marinating the meat in a mixture of lemon juice and vinegar. Read More>>

As we get older we need fewer calories to function optimally and be well, a side effect of aging that is often ignored. 

Unfortunately, many of us continue to eat as if we were youngsters. When combined with decreased regular physical activity due to illness, this "double whammy" can lead to weight gain.

This doesn’t have to happen to you. 

By paying a little attention to your diet and engaging in even gentle regular exercise you can eat well and maybe even feel well, too.

Fish Oils and Depression in the Elderly

Eighty may be the new 50, but some problems are common to both age groups, including depression. Senior citizens might experience depression for a number of reasons, but a new consideration is potential relative nutritional deficiencies. One that has come to light focuses on the intake of omega-3 fatty acids, in this case EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

Researchers recently published the results of a French study of elderly citizens with depression. Those subjects found to have low levels of EPA were at higher risk for depression, and, strikingly, those already being treated with antidepressants were at risk for more severe depression if their EPA levels were low.

Cooking and eating well in our 70s, 80s, 90s...

Ms. D is concerned about her parents. They are in their 70s, in fairly good health, but have little interest in shopping for food or cooking, and eat most of their meals out. Ms. D wonders if there might be easy, "core food" meals her parents could shop for, make and enjoy at home to stay well.
