B Vitamins to Prevent Heart Disease? Maybe Not...

Doctors have long recognized an association between high levels of an amino acid called homocysteine and the risk for heart disease and stroke. The good news appeared to be that it was easy to lower homocysteine levels by increasing the intake of B vitamins, specifically folic acid and vitamin B12.

The bad news? Recent research suggests that while B vitamins do lower homocysteine levels, they may not impact risk for heart disease or stroke.

GERD, PPIs and You

Your doctor may have prescribed a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) to help treat an ulcer or reflux (heartburn). That's appropriate and in many cases important for your health.

But the effectiveness of PPIs sometimes come at a price if you've been taking them for a long time.

Make time to ask your doctor whether you really need to be on a PPI, especially if the main reason for taking one is mild GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Read More>>
Lower Trans Fat, Higher Saturated Fat? Not necessarily so...

When food manufacturers take those unhealthy trans fats out, do they add more saturated fat in?

Experts have been worried that lower food trans fat levels might mean higher saturated fat content.

But the news is good - according to a recent report it appears that food manufacturers have largely NOT added significant amounts of saturated fat to their foods, even while removing trans fat.

Salt in the News - AGAIN! This Time - Fast Food.

I've posted a number of blogs on sodium / salt in recent months, but a new study adds a wrinkle to the discussion - and yet another reason to limit intake of fast food.

It turns out that fast food meals are often VERY high in sodium.

And you know that high salt / sodium intake is one the biggest risk factors for development of high blood pressure.

Fast food is high in calories, high in fat, and high in sodium. Thus, it is high on the list of foods NOT to eat! Read More>>
