Coffee, Tea, Diabetes Free?
Created on 12/29/2009
Are you still insisting that daily cup o' java is good for you? You may be right...

Recent data suggest that heavy drinkers of coffee (even decaff) and tea, meaning at least 3-4 cups per day, have a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

The details are in the balance - remember that even decaffeinated coffee contains some caffeine, and that it's important to minimize caffeine intake after 3:00 to ensure restorative nighttime sleep.

People with certain health issues, like high blood pressure, should limit caffeine, too. Read More>>
New Year’s Resolution? Keep It Simple
Created on 12/17/2009
“I’m going to exercise for an hour every day.” “I’m going to lose 45 pounds this year.” “I’m going to…”

Try this New Year’s resolution on for size – “I’m going to be kind to myself and make a reasonable New Year’s resolution that won’t stress me out, that is easily attainable, and that will give me a relatively pain-free sense of accomplishment.”

Attitude of Gratitude – Part II
Created on 12/17/2009
I recently learned a good friend of mine is very ill, his prognosis poor, yet when I spoke with him by phone he sounded well and at peace.
He said that letting go of his need for control left him with gratitude for all he has experienced through 5 decades of life. He hopes for more years, of course, and isn’t about to give up, but he is at peace with whatever is in store for him.

Whatever your circumstances, may you be embraced by what is perhaps the greatest gift of all this Christmas and Chanukah season – peace.

Created on 12/8/2009

J says that she enjoys salty food and is healthy – why does she have to give up salt?!

Many of us enjoy salty foods and even add salt to our meals. We’ve long heard that doing so is not good for us, but now comes the results of a review on the topic that shows MAJOR risks (high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease) associated with typical-to-high salt / sodium intakes.

J, look for your favorite foods in low-sodium forms (read your food labels!) and please don’t add salt to your meals to help you stay well!

Created on 12/1/2009
I support the use of osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation for uncomplicated neck and back problems - but can spinal manipulation be reasonably employed to help people with, as T asks, asthma?

Most sound medical research to date suggests no. That said, working to gently release any obstruction to the natural movements of the rib cage to enable easier breathing makes some sense on a mechanical level. So, while spinal manipulation may not help, could other forms of manipulation be of benefit? Maybe...

As you know, T, asthma is a serious condition and requires conventional medical care as the centerpiece to treatment.  Read More>>
