Energy Star Logo

We have 35 stores that carry the EPA's Energy Star label.

Systems that are currently in place at Harris Teeter include:roofing system
  • Energy efficient roofing system
  • Energy Management Programs that utilize high efficiency equipment and designs
  • Non-Ozone Depleting Refrigerants in our refrigeration systems for new stores and major remodels
  • Water conservation devices at all sinks, toilets, and faucets  including  waterless urinals, solar re-charging flush valves and automated hand sink faucets
  • High Efficiency Gas Water Heaters (94 – 96% efficient) Heat reclaimed from refrigeration systems provide heat for water and space conditioning
  • Proper disposal of all refrigeration oil and refrigerant Gas Water Heater
  • Dual Path HVAC systems to control humidity
  • Demand exhaust hood control system that only operates during cooking events
Systems Currently Being Tested

We currently have several stores in which we are testing a variety of energy efficient and alternate building system concepts for eventual rollout to all stores.

  • Day light harvesting system, includes both skylights and dimmers
  • Innovative control strategies Skylight
  • Energy monitoring system
  • Using secondary refrigerant systems that use over 75% less refrigerant
Construction and Energy Initiatives

  • We have opened two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) stores; one in Crozet, VA and one in Chantilly VA. These stores are 25% more energy efficient than conventional supermarkets and have a water usage reduction of over 51%.
  • 94% of the waste generated during construction of the Chantilly location was recycled.
  • The refrigerant load in the Crozet store is 85% less than a conventional system.
  • 62% of the construction materials were manufactured regionally and 40% of the total buildings are made with recycled building materials.
  • 99% of all wood was sourced from a sustainable forest.

Future Initiatives

  • We are currently planning to open three more LEED stores; in 2010 we'll open one in Mt. Pleasant, SC and one in Baltimore, MD. In 2011 we'll open one in Olney, MD.
  • Purchase only energy star labeled equipment when available.
  • Require all equipment vendors and suppliers to provide information on their current recycling, waste disposal and green initiatives.
