My Earth Products and Sourcing

Harris Teeter continues to be a positive environmental steward by partnering with vendors that follow sustainable practices. We also follow sustainable practices within our own brand products and departments.

We constantly review our item mix and we are proud to offer sustainable products throughout our stores including:

  • Mrs. Meyer's and Method
  • Natural Hardwood charcoal
  • Fluorescent light bulbs

Harris Teeter also sources register tape from Appleton, a global leader in specialty papers. Appleton is committed to environmental responsibility and uses a significant amount of post industrial recycled fiber at its paper mill. The company is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and its products are Bisphenol A (BPA) free.

Harris Teeter Farmers Market
Our Farmers Market associates are committed to providing their customers with a wide variety of top quality fruits and vegetables including both locally grown and organic products.
  • Locally Grown Produce
Harris Teeter believes it can help both the local economy and the environment by sourcing from local farms. When you see a locally grown sign in your Farmers Market, it means the product was grown by local farmers within your state. When you see a regionally grown sign with a state designation, it means the produce was grown by farmers within that state, generally within six hours drive time from the farm to your store. A shorter drive time helps reduce our carbon footprint on the environment.
  • Seasonal Produce
Harris Teeter encourages customers to buy in-season produce as seasonal fruit and vegetables are fresher and more sustainable on the environment.
  • Organic Produce
Harris Teeter partners with certified organic farmers who follow the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines for organic farming. USDA certification ensures that our organic farmers grow their crops without the use of synthetic pesticides or herbicides and are committed to being good stewards of our environment.

Harris Teeter Fishermans Market
Harris Teeter supports sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices and is committed to long-term partnerships with fishermen, communities and suppliers who practice and support responsible fishing and sustainable management of our rivers and oceans. As good environmental stewards, we realize that it is necessary to invest in our oceans and rivers to provide our children and future generations the health benefits of fish and seafood for years to come.
  • Informed Purchase
At Harris Teeter, our Seafood Captains are trained and empowered to be confident that we sell only the highest quality seafood from trusted sources that adhere to all local, state, domestic and international laws. We partner with long-term suppliers who are able to demonstrate in an open, responsible manner and who operate in compliance with all relevant national and international laws. Harris Teeter also operates in an openness of labeling our seafood to insure the customer has sufficient information at the point of sale to make an informed purchasing decision. We communicate this through labeling the product with whether it is wild caught or farm raised, its country of origin, as well as the method that it was caught.

  • Wild Caught Seafood
Harris Teeter will strive to purchase wild species of seafood from sustainable sources that have put into place third party certifications such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or Global Trust Certification (GTC). Both the MSC and GTC have internationally recognized standards for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability. Wild stocks that have achieved certification meet all standards for sustainable fishing and can be traced back to a sustainable fishery. For those species that do not have a third party certification, Harris Teeter only purchases from sustainable stocks that have a Fisheries Management system in place.

  • Farm Raised Seafood
Harris Teeter purchases farm raised seafood from fisheries that adhere to strict aquaculture guidelines that do not adversely affect the surrounding ecosystem or damage native species. The company seeks partners in aquaculture who have gone through third party certification for sustainability. The Aquaculture Certification Council as well as Global Trust Certification are two third party certifiers for our aquaculture partners. These aquaculture partners are certified and audited for their role in:

      • Social and environmental responsibility
      • Food safety
      • Traceability throughout the production chain
