Partnering with certified organic farmers who follow the United States Department of Agriculture guidelines for organic farming is a top priority. USDA certification ensures that our organic farmers grow their crops without the use of synthetic pesticides or herbicides and are committed to being good stewards of our environment.

Supporting locally grown produce is another way Harris Teeter helps improve the environment and local economies. When you see the HT Locally Grown logo, you can rest assured the produce has traveled 6 or fewer hours from the farm to the store. This shorter drive time reduces the carbon footprint on our environment while supporting local farmers and their neighborhoods.

An additional focus for the Harris Teeter Farmers Market is waste and landfill usage, a growing concern that impacts us all. We realize that the use of petroleum based packaging and non degradable containers pollute our environment. Recently we have begun replacing waxed coated packaging with Reusable Produce Containers. ( RPC’s) The use of these RPC’s will reduce tons of waste entering our landfills on an annual basis.

Harris Teeter and its vendors are continually searching for new innovations in packaging that are environmentally friendly. Our company has recently converted produce bags to a 100% degradable bag. We also use plant based (non-petroleum) plastic containers for our in-store fresh cut fruit and for our HT Traders salad kits. Harris Teeter is committed to evaluating these new alternatives in packaging and will continue to support their use as they become a viable option.
