Produce Suppliers and Retailers Expand Partnership during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
The Pink Ribbon Produce In-Store Program Launches at Harris Teeter This October
Pink Ribbon Produce, a unique retail program committed to the fight against breast cancer and raising breast cancer awareness, will return this October for its eighth year at all Harris Teeter stores. Since 2008, Harris Teeter's shoppers have raised $178,916 by purchasing products from vendors participating in the initiative, helping to support important programs funded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc .® (NBCF). New for 2013 is the Fresh Plate Challenge, which encourages consumers to fill half of their plate with fruits and vegetables.
“Our Green Thumb experts do a great job of making sure our Farmers Market is stocked with the freshest, highest quality produce available, and they are also available to help educate our shoppers about the produce available in our stores,” said Danna Jones, communication specialist with Harris Teeter. “The Fresh Plate Challenge is a great addition to Pink Ribbon Produce, and we hope it serves to increase the amount of money raised for such a worthwhile program as well as encourage healthy eating habits at each meal.”
With the Fresh Plate Challenge, Pink Ribbon Produce, Harris Teeter and its produce vendors want to help consumers meet the challenge of filling half of their plate with fruits and vegetables. The American Cancer Society recommends eating at least 2 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables each day to help decrease the risk of cancer. Consumers can get a free Fresh Plate Challenge guide by visiting www.pinkribbonproduce.org.
“Pink Ribbon Produce is beginning its eighth year, and we are so proud to have the opportunity to continue our support for the National Breast Cancer Foundation,” said Debbie Augustine, chief executive officer of AugustineIdeas. “Encouraging healthy eating with the Fresh Plate Challenge is a fun way to give back while bettering yourself at the same time.”
Through various fundraising activities, including Pink Ribbon Produce, NBCF provides funding for research, educational programs and mammograms to women across the country.
By bringing together Harris Teeter, NBCF and produce suppliers, Pink Ribbon Produce provides shoppers with an easy way to give back to their communities and support efforts to find cures for breast cancer. The money raised goes back into the community by providing mammograms and educational programs to help save the lives of thousands of uninsured women. Stores will direct shoppers to the participating produce suppliers with a Pink Ribbon Produce program icon on posters and point-of-sale signs next to the product.
