Harris Teeter and Titan Farms Donate Over 26,500 pounds of Peaches to Local Food Bank Partner
Charlotte, N.C. – August 23, 2013 – Harris Teeter and its vendor Titan Farms, donated today approximately 26,500 pounds of peaches to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina today to help feed the hungry in the local community. This donation is part of the retailer’s participation in the “Peaches with A Purpose” program sponsored by peach grower Titan Farms.
Titan Farms, the largest peach grower on the east coast, created the Peaches with a Purpose program to help feed the under served while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States.
The program spanned four weeks in July and August and encompassed 150 Harris Teeter stores in North and South Carolina. For the total amount of peaches purchased during the campaign period, Harris Teeter in turn donated a percentage back to the food bank. The total donation is in excess of 53,000 pounds of peaches; Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC in Winston-Salem and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte will each benefit from the program.
According to Feeding America’s most recent Map the Meal Gap report, more than 50 million Americans are food insecure and do not have consistent access to sufficient food to live an active healthy life. In the 18 counties served by Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, more than 350,000 people struggle with hunger, including 1 in 4 children under the age of 18.
In addition to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina's core food distribution program, which serves as the major source of donated food for a network of more than 400 emergency food assistance programs serving the region, the organization has a strategic program focus on alleviating the very significant problem of childhood hunger. Programs are targeted to reach children at times when they are most in need - after school, over weekends and school vacations and in the summer. Additional special programs include nutrition education outreach and workshops geared toward empowering families to shop and cook healthy on a budget.
“Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC is dedicated to increasing access to healthy food to improve the food security and health of people in need across its 18-county service area,” said Clyde Fitzgerald, executive director. “Our year-round partnership with Harris Teeter is critical to this mission, as are generous donations from suppliers like Titan Farms. The fresh peaches donated today will benefit the growing numbers of individuals and families in need turning to our network of partner food assistance programs for help.”
“We are excited to be the first retailer to participate in Peaches with a Purpose,” said Catherine Becker, communication manager for Harris Teeter. “Fresh produce is scarce in food banks across the country, and we are happy to be able to contribute nutritious items to those in need.”
“We are thrilled to offer a program that will help our retail partners give back to their local communities,” said Chalmers Carr, president of Titan Farms. “We would love to make this an annual campaign that will get stronger each year.”
Harris Teeter and Titan Farms would like to offer a special thanks to Salem Produce, LLC for helping transport the donated product.
