Harris Teeter Launches Construction Project at Plaza Midwood Location
Company Celebrates Legacy of W.T. Harris and Shares Details of New Store

Charlotte, N.C. – Harris Teeter has served customers from its Central Avenue location since 1938, and the company is now launching a major project to transform the store from a small location with limited amenities to a facility that better reflects the company’s standards, offering quality products and selection while serving to enhance an already iconic Plaza Midwood neighborhood.

The company’s Central Avenue project was publically announced April 2011, and in keeping with W.T. Harris’ commitment to customer service and innovation, Harris Teeter reached out to and has continued working closely with nearby residents to finalize renovation plans for its new store.  Harris Teeter will officially close its existing Central Avenue location on June 5, 2012 to begin a year-long renovation project that includes demolishing the existing building to make way for a new two-story store.

The new art deco building will be approximately 45,000 square feet and will include an upstairs mezzanine with both indoor and outdoor seating for shoppers.  The store will feature expanded chef prepared foods; a soup and salad bar; greater specialty cheese selection; a greater selection of wine; and an expanded produce, seafood and service meat. In addition, Harris Teeter will incorporate a variety of sustainable features in the new building including water conservation devices and a green roof.  The company will also reclaim wood from the existing location and integrate it into components featured in the new store.

Harris Teeter also has plans to enhance the streetscape along both Central Avenue and Plaza Road. Along the street frontage on Central Avenue, Harris Teeter will construct new brick sidewalks, new trees in planters and on street parking.  Along the Plaza Road frontage, the company will incorporate new plant strips and brick sidewalks, all consistent with the City’s long range vision for the Central Avenue corridor and Harris Teeter’s intention to build a pedestrian friendly location.

It will be approximately one year before Harris Teeter opens its new store, and associates currently working at the company’s Central Avenue location will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other Harris Teeter stores.  Harris Teeter will begin demolition work in late June, mobilize the site for work in late July and plans to have the new building under roof by December 2012.  Harris Teeter anticipates opening the new location in late spring, early summer 2013.

While the new store is under construction, Harris Teeter shoppers can visit nearby Harris Teeter locations including our Cotswold Mall, West 6th Street and Kenilworth Commons locations.  Harris Teeter is also offering free delivery service through its new Harris Teeter Express Lane delivery program.  The delivery is available to specific zip codes and for shoppers whose orders exceed $25.
