Marathon to Supply Holiday Food to Nearly 650 Agencies in 19 Counties

 

What: Harvest Feast Marathon Food Drive Kick-Off Event & Turkey Car Racing Competition

When:   Kick-Off Event is Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. followed by Turkey Car Racing.

Where:
 Harris Teeter at Stonecrest at Piper Glen
               7852 Rea Road Charlotte, N.C.  28277

Why:  With 15.1 percent of the population in our 19-county region living at or below the poverty level including over 185,000 children and senior citizens, the holiday season is the perfect time to share our resources with those less fortunate.  The Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina is hopeful that this year’s drives will bring in much-needed holiday food items – turkeys, hams, stuffing and canned vegetables.  This will help Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina supply holiday food to almost 650 agencies in 19 counties (14 in North Carolina and five in South Carolina).  The food drive will run for two consecutive weekends at the Stonecrest at Piper Glen Harris Teeter.

Schedule of Events:

Nov. 11
11 a.m.:  Kick-Off & Turkey Car Racing with media representatives
9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.:  Food Drive and Live Radio Remote

Nov. 12
9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.:  Food Drive and Live Radio Remote
11 a.m. – 3 p.m.:  Kids Event includes refreshments, moon bounce, coloring table and more! A special pet adoption will be held.

9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.: Food Drive and Live Radio Remote

Nov. 19
9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.: Food Drive and Live Radio Remote
10 – 11 a.m.: Registration for Wiener Dog Race
11 a.m. – Noon: Wiener Dog Race
11 a.m. – 3 p.m.: Kids Event includes refreshments, moon bounce, coloring table and more! A special pet adoption will be held.

Shoppers who cannot make it to the food drive are encouraged to make a donation at any Harris Teeter location through Nov. 29.  Food donation bins for non-perishable food donations are located at the entrance of all Harris Teeter stores.  Shoppers can also purchase $5 and $20 food donation cards.  These financial donations are converted into gift cards which the food bank can use throughout the year.

As part of Feeding America, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, serves 19 counties in North and South Carolina.  In FY2010-2011, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina distributed 37 million pounds of food and essential grocery items to approximately 650 hunger feeding agencies including emergency pantries, soup kitchens, senior programs, shelters and low-income daycares.
