Ward 6 Councilmember, Your Neighborhood Grocer Help Transform Neighborhoods by Supporting Educational Activities for Inner City Children
Charlotte, N.C., Oct. 5, 2011 - Harris Teeter and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells are joining forces to offer a $10,000 donation to Jan’s Tutoring House (JTH), a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC that pairs children with volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring. Beyond helping improve academic skills, mentors encourage positive behaviors, assist with the development of social skills, self-confidence and self-sufficiency.
Community members and media are invited into Jan’s Tutoring House on Friday, October 7, 2011 to meet Executive Director Tonya Woods, volunteer mentors and the children who will surely be the future leaders of America, thanks to programs like Jan’s Tutoring House.
Councilmember Wells has won support throughout Ward 6 and Washington, DC for forging public, private partnerships to translate ideas into real improvements for Ward 6 residents and beyond. He began volunteering at JTH in 1997 and recognized Harris Teeter as a likely partner because of the company’s commitment to providing educational opportunities to children through its Together in Education program. Since 1998, Harris Teeter has donated over $15.6 million to schools in its communities through Together in Education and over $1.5 million to schools in northern Virginia, including Washington, DC. This most recent donation to Jan’s Tutoring House further signifies both Harris Teeter and Councilmember’s dedication to the community.
