On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, Harris Teeter and Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason will assemble and donate 2,250 Thanksgiving dinner bags to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, and the company invites reporters to join them to help raise awareness for their fight against hunger. Beason and Harris Teeter will also make a stop at the Boys & Girls Club to personally distribute 250 of the dinner bags to children and their families who face the risk of going hungry.
“Children represent the largest share of the population living in poverty,” says Beason. “I wanted to join the team to help raise awareness of this growing hunger problem in our own community, especially as it affects kids. I want to be a part of the solution. These kids ARE our future. They deserve a fighting chance.”
Each Thanksgiving bag will feed a family of four (a total of 9,000 meals) and contains cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, a 2 liter soft drink, pie, rolls and ham. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina will identify and distribute the remaining 2,000 Thanksgiving bags to emergency pantries throughout its 19 county region starting November 17, 2010. Emergency pantries and soup kitchens are reporting increases in requests for assistance of 30% - 40% over the same time period last year. Unemployment rates have climbed into double digits in several counties served by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. The needs in our region are greater than ever and our belief is that no one in our community should go hungry.
“This is another great example of the many ways in which Harris Teeter provides for those in need in our community,” said Kay Carter, executive director for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. “As one of our largest donors they have helped us feed tens of thousands of hungry people.”
Harris Teeter would like to thank its generous vendors including Heineken, Kraft, Hormel, Burdette Beckmann, Inc., Smart Balance, SellEthics Marketing Group, Ocean Spray, Del Monte, Bruce’s Foods, Crossmark, Pinnacle Foods, Jessie Lord Bakery, Lane, 7th Generation, SciVolutions, Acosta, Coca-Cola, Talenti Gelato, Mead Johnson, BIC Consumer Products and Chicken of the Sea for making this donation possible.
