Shop smart to keep yourself at the top of your game this month

Basketball with Harris Teeter logoCharlotte, NC - This month many of our shoppers will be tuned into the television to cheer for their favorite college basketball teams and watch March Madness unfold, all the while munching for hours on end.  Most of the food eaten during this time, however, is worthy of an offensive foul – it’s typically very high in salt, sugar, calories and saturated fat.  This month, in his bi-monthly e-letter, Dr. Russell Greenfield, M.D. and part of Harris Teeter’s yourwellness team, offers our shoppers tips on better ways to snack while watching hoops.

Below are snippets from Dr. Russ’s e-letter released to members today about what foods to serve to the fans at your home during March Madness.  Remember to sign-up to receive other timely, health-related news in our bi-monthly e-letter.
 
Table Snacks
Put out a big bowl of air-popped popcorn sprinkled with some seasoning (maybe cinnamon or tamari), pita chips with hummus, or bowls of fresh or dried fruit and unsalted nuts…

Main Course
If you’re making or ordering pizza, choose whole grain crust and add some healthy veggies as a topping.  Another fan favorite is pasta – tortellini primavera, or a simple pasta dish made with extra virgin olive oil or marinara sauce and fresh veggies…

Drinks
Avoid empty calories and the high sugar loads associated with sodas and fruit juices – instead serve your guests clean, fresh water and flavored seltzers (you can make your own by adding a little fresh fruit juice to plain seltzer)… 

Sweets
It never hurts to have chocolate around and even better if you choose dark chocolate (it provides health benefits that milk chocolate doesn’t). Choose products containing at least 70% cocoa, and leave small squares out for guests to nibble on.
