Charlotte, NC – Harris Teeter recently received information about the United Way of Central Carolina’s Stuff the Bus program taking place Monday, June 22nd – Friday, June 26th, 2009.  After learning more about Stuff the Bus, Harris Teeter wanted to provide its generous shoppers with a convenient way to participate and joined in the campaign.

Stuff the Bus is part of United Way of Americas’ National “Day of Action” scheduled on June 21st.  United Ways across the country will be participating in various activities to make a difference in their local markets.  United Way of Central Carolinas is extending its “Day of Action” to include a one-week period during which community members can donate needed items for homeless men and women during the week of June 21st.

Over 6,550 people in the Charlotte – Mecklenburg area are homeless. That total includes people who are living on the streets, staying in shelters and with friends and family, or living in transitional or permanent supportive housing. Nearly half are families; more than a third are children.  United Way will be collecting donated items and giving them to member agencies who help fight the battle against homelessness in Charlotte including Center of Hope, Battered Women's Shelter, Uptown Shelter, Charlotte Emergency Housing, Hope Haven and YWCA.

The week long drive will end on Friday, June 26th at United Way of Central Carolinas, 301 South Brevard at 11 a.m. Representatives from Carolinas HealthCare Systems, Harris Teeter, and Wachovia will be on hand to talk to media and present their donated items.
