Harris Teeter customers recently capped off a successful two-week fundraising campaign for the American Heart Association (AHA), helping us raise an astounding $67,091 during our second annual "Buy A Heart – Save A Heart" heart card sale that took place in all 80 Harris Teeter Southern Region stores.
Harris Teeter has long supported the AHA in its effort to raise awareness for cardiovascular disease and promote healthier lives through sponsorship of the AHA’s Start! Charlotte Heart Walk. In 2006, when Harris Teeter launched its own yourwellness initiative to provide shoppers with guidance on important health issues, the company decided to take its partnership with the AHA one step further. Harris Teeter looked toward its valued customers for support and launched the heart card point of purchase program.
Harris Teeter customers were quick to respond to our call for support and raised over $100,000 in the two years that the heart card program has run, more than doubling sales from the first year to the second year. The plan is simple -- when customers check-out, cashiers offer them a chance to donate to the AHA by purchasing either a $1 or $5 Heart Card. The hearts are displayed in the store until the end of the campaign, helping to raise both funds and awareness for the American Heart Association.
