As the need for funds developed in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina Harris Teeter initiated a campaign to help provide relief. All 144 Harris Teeter stores sold $1 and $5 Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund cards at their registers from August 30th – September 18th. Customer, associate and media partner support helped raise $634,442. A $25,000 donation from Harris Teeter is also included in the in-store campaign total.
100% of the in-store money raised will go directly to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. This fund supports the affected areas by providing relief supplies, emergency response units, personnel and support for long-term reconstruction.
“It is our responsibility to give our shoppers and easy way to lend a hand to our neighbors in need,” said Fred Morganthall, President of Harris Teeter. “Our customer’s generosity speaks volumes and we would like them to know how appreciative we are for their support,” added Morganthall.
Harris Teeter also donated two truck loads of food to the Salvation Army to help with their release efforts in Louisiana. The products included were boneless chicken breast, hamburgers, breakfast links, Italian sausage, water and ice totaling over $106,000.
The total amount raised through Harris Teeter corporate, shopper, and associates donations surpassed $752,000. This dollar amount averages to over $5,000 per Harris Teeter store which will directly benefited the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Harris Teeter is committed to the communities where our customers and associates live and work. We will continue to give them the opportunity to donate to organizations that make a difference in the lives of their friends, colleagues and communities across the country
