Harris Teeter, Second Harvest Food Bank, and area YMCAs kick off the Kids Café
360 children in our area will now be guaranteed a hot meal.

Charlotte NC - At the Stars Come Out at Night concert tonight, our area's under-privileged youth met their idols, had fun and learned about an important YMCA program, the Kids Café.

Harris Teeter presented a check to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina for 15,000 to sponsor two local Kids Café programs designed to serve meals to children at risk for hunger. There are approximately 360 kids at both the Johnston YMCA in uptown Charlotte and the Harris YMCA in Southeast Charlotte that will now be provided with highly nutritious snacks and meals at least twice a week.

Just like tonight's concert the program will benefit kids 17 years and younger. Pro athletes and musicians took the time tonight to hang out with the kids and speak to them about how important it is to stay on the right track.

"It was wonderful to see the kids faces light up when they met some of the celebrities here tonight," said Tommy Franklin, Harris Teeter store manager. "Receiving encouragement and sound advice from people they look up to will really drive home the importance of good nutrition," added Franklin.

Harris Teeter is opening their first uptown store on Wednesday, August 20th. Franklin is the store manager for the new uptown location. His team will be working in collaboration with Second Harvest Food Bank to secure the needs of the Johnston YMCA's Kids Cafe, which is right down the street.

Nutrition education is a major component of Kids Café programming. On a monthly basis, Kids Rock, a course of nutrition education activities will be conducted on-site. Annually, middle school age youth are selected to participate in Junior Chefs, a youth leadership development initiative.

Second Harvest reports that 90,000 kids go hungry everyday in the Charlotte Metrolina Area. Harris Teeter knows how important it is to combat hunger in our communities. Kids Café is a nationally acclaimed after-school tutoring and feeding program for children at risk of going hungry, established by America's Second Harvest, the national network of food banks. The basis for the Kids Café is the importance of good nutrition. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina has already grown the program to provide one-on-one tutoring, recreation and social skills building.
