One in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child. Childhood hunger is an unseen epidemic in our nation. And it grows even more acute during the summer, when literally millions of children don't have access to the school lunches they normally depend upon.

According to the research conducted by America's Second Harvest, nearly 9 million children go hungry each day. Almost 90,000 children in the greater Charlotte area are at risk of hunger each day.

Harris Teeter, Inc. with headquarters in Matthews, NC, is a subsidiary of Ruddick Corporation (NYSE:RDK). Harris Teeter is the 39th largest supermarket in the United States with 2002 sales of $2.35 billion. The grocery store chain employs over 14,000 associates and has 143 stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida.
