One in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child. Childhood hunger is an unseen epidemic in our nation. And it grows even more acute during the summer.

To underscore this year's theme, "Can 9 Million Hungry Kids Inspire a Nation?" Second Harvest of Middle Tennessee has planned a "Vacation from Hunger" box packing session with local volunteers to highlight their Kids Café summer programs. The boxes will provide enough food for 6 meals – a huge help to those who don't have access to free and reduced school lunches over the summer months.

Organized in 1978, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is a private, not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization. The Food Bank's mission is to feed hungry people in Middle Tennessee while reducing food waste through an efficient system of collection and distribution. In 2001 / 2002, Second Harvest distributed over nine million pounds of food through a network of over 500 not-for-profit agencies (e.g., food pantries, soup kitchens, day care centers, senior citizens' centers). Ninety-four cents of every dollar donated goes directly to the Food Bank's programs.

Harris Teeter, Inc. with headquarters in Matthews, NC, is a subsidiary of Ruddick Corporation (NYSE:RDK). Harris Teeter is the 39th largest supermarket in the United States with 2002 sales of $2.35 billion. The grocery store chain employs over 14,000 associates and has 143 stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida.
