One in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child. Childhood hunger is an unseen epidemic in our nation. And it grows even more acute during the summer, when literally millions of children don't have access to the school lunches they normally depend upon.
To underscore this year's theme, "Can 9 Million Hungry Kids Inspire a Nation?" the Capital Area Food Bank will highlight our Kids Cafe programs. National, and local political, business and civic leaders and celebrities have been invited to serve a healthy snack or meal to the Kids Cafe participants at one of three locations in each area that we serve. The event will feature entertainment and fun activities for the children. The kids have created pictures and messages on paper plates related to their favorite foods, meals, and their experience with hunger to be presented at the ceremony.
Harris Teeter is proud to announce their sponsorship of a Kids Café site in Northern Virginia through a partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank. A new trailer is being donated to help transport food to those in need.
The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest public, non-profit food and nutrition education resource in the Metro Area. Through our network of more than 750 member feeding programs, each year we distribute millions of pounds of food to the community and educate thousands of local residents on hunger, poverty and nutrition issues.
