One in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child. Childhood hunger is an unseen epidemic in our nation. And it grows even more acute during the summer, when literally millions of children don't have access to the school lunches they normally depend upon.

The Food Bank nourishes children in a variety of ways with this summer program. "We teach kids about food safety, many have to prepare food at home for themselves and their siblings and we want to help them stay healthy," notes Loretta Brown, Director of Development. Other lessons include sessions on why it's important to eat your vegetables and how to choose healthy, inexpensive foods that will help them grow.

"The Food Bank of Virginia Peninsula has an important kids program during the summer months, Harris Teeter is proud to offer a $10,000 donation to help feed children in need in the Tidewater area throughout the summer," says Tara Stewart, Director of Communications for Harris Teeter.

The mission of the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula is to distribute food effectively through collaborative efforts that minimize hunger, promote nutrition and self-reliance through education.
