One in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child. Currently 13 million children in our country suffer from chronic hunger. In Charleston County, alone, more than 53% of children receive free or reduced price meals during the school year — evidence of widespread food insecurity at home says the South Carolina Department of Social Service.
Harris Teeter wants to help the Lowcountry Food Bank do something to help Charleston's children right here in our own backyard. Harris Teeter is proud to announce its sponsorship of the Cannon Street YMCA'S Kids Café program. This program provides nearly 60 low-income children with one-on-one tutoring, nutrition education, recreation, social skill building, and hot, nutritious meals.
"We are especially proud to offer help to the Cannon Street YMCA. It's located in the heart of downtown Charleston and serves children from throughout the city a hot, nutritious meal, five days a week." says Tara Stewart, Director of Communications for Harris Teeter.
Kids Café is a nationally acclaimed after-school tutoring and feeding program for children at risk of going hungry, established by America's Second Harvest, the national network of food banks. The Lowcountry Food Bank launched its own Kids Café program in 2000. Working through its grass roots network of local agencies, this local outreach has grown into fourteen Kids Cafés in Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Jasper, and Hampton Counties, serving over 600 needy children.
Harris Teeter, Inc. with headquarters in Matthews, NC, is a subsidiary of Ruddick Corporation (NYSE:RDK). Harris Teeter is the 39th largest supermarket in the United States with 2002 sales of $2.35 billion. The grocery store chain employs over 14,000 associates and has 143 stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida.
