MEDIA ALERT: Wilmington - Harris Teeter Helps Good Shepherd Ministries and Second Helping Program for National Hunger Awareness
What: National Hunger Awareness Day Marks Inauguration of New Building For Good Shepherd Ministries and their Second Helpings Program.
Harris Teeter to donate $10,000 to building fund

When: Thursday, June 5th
10:00am
Where: Good Shepherd Ministries of Wilmington, Inc
811 Martin Street

The goal of National Hunger Awareness Day is to rally our local community to once again prove its commitment and enthusiasm in protecting Wilmington's families and children, helping to stock the shelves of the Food Bank for a long, hot summer.

Good Shepherd Ministries of Wilmington runs Second Helpings, a food distribution program, serving over 1720 people each week a nourishing meal. In addition to their soup kitchen they support 19 other soup kitchens, shelters, and local agencies throughout the Wilmington area with donated food. Good Shepherd's soup kitchen feeds nearly 200 people each day.

Their mission began in 1983 to serve the homeless a lunch of soup and sandwiches. From those small beginnings the soup kitchen eventually grew to it's present size. Because of this growth, the Second Helpings Program is moving to a new building. On Thursday, June 5th, 2003, inauguration ceremonies will be held at 10:00am and Harris Teeter will present a check for $10,000 to support the building fund.

So far this year, Good Shepherd's soup kitchen has used over 584,000 pounds of food to help their neighbors in need. This program can always use support from local restaurants, grocery stores, and individuals. We hope this event will draw attention to the rise in childhood hunger over the summer months and spur others to continue to give to those in need, right in their backyard.
