Harris Teeter Customers Raise $160,106 for Operation Phone Home
Shoppers rallied around our troops overseas and their families at home.

Charlotte, NC - Harris Teeter would like to thank their customers and everyone who supported the Red Cross and Operation Phone Home. The campaign ended in our stores on April 30th and the total money raised by Harris Teeter and our loyal shoppers comes to over $160,000.

In April, the first 5,000 phone cards were shipped to field hospitals at Base Naval de Rota in Spain, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany where wounded service people were being treated, and Camp Doha Kuwait, a "base camp" location representing several branches of the service.

An additional 5,000 cards were sent in early May to Kuwait and yet another shipment will go out in the coming weeks. By the close of the program, 22,500 cards will be in the hands of U.S. servicemen and women stationed throughout the Middle East.

"We wanted our customers to know how well Operation Phone Home went throughout the six states Harris Teeter serves," said President Fred Morganthall. "It's remarkable to raise over $160,000 in five weeks time. That speaks volumes about how much our customers wanted to have a way that they could personally help military families."

And help it will. Combined with over $96,000 raised by the Red Cross and other retailers throughout the Southeast, many military families can stay in touch with their soldier and be comforted by hearing their voice on the other end of the phone line.

"This money will not only help thousands of service members stay in touch with their families back home, but will also help those families with support and assistance as they carry on in the absence of their loved ones," said Joe Becker, Executive Director of the Greater Carolinas Chapter of the American Red Cross. "The response in communities all over the region has been fantastic, as people have shown how much they appreciate the sacrifices the military families are making."

Harris Teeter was proud to support Operation Phone Home because it was a unique program that provided comfort for the soldier in the field and the family at home. We are thrilled with the success and want to extend our sincere thanks to our customers and everyone who contributed and made this program a success.

Though Harris Teeter's part in the campaign has ended, Operation Phone Home will continue through May 31, 2003. If people want to donate they can go to www.redcrosshelps.org.
