Harris Teeter and Newman's Own Help Jerry's Kids
$11,000 donated to kick-start Shamrocks Against Dystrophy Campaign

Charlotte, NC - Earlier today, Harris Teeter teamed up with Newman's Own, Inc. to donate $11,000 to help kick start this year's Shamrocks Against Dystrophy Campaign. All Harris Teeter stores will begin selling green shamrocks for $1 and gold shamrocks for $5, today, February 19th through March 18th.

"The Harris Teeter family wants to help give local families struggling with neuromuscular disease a chance for better medical treatment, faster diagnosis, and continued physical and emotional support through the network of local clinics," said Fred Morganthall, President of Harris Teeter.

Funds raised will help provide health services free of charge to local families including; assistance with purchase of medical equipment, wheelchairs, leg braces and communication devices, clinical visits, diagnostic testing, as well as provide aid for 9 area MDA summer camps.

Julie Williams, mother of 13-year old Samuel, both diagnosed with CharcotMarieTooth disease, accepted the initial donation of $11,000 today on behalf of MDA. It's inspirational to hear the stories from kids who went to MDA summer camps and how they were able to make friends with other kids, who understood their disease, regain their self-esteem, and rebuild their hope for the future. "It's a good feeling to know that our contributions are making such a difference in the lives of area children," said Britt Moose, Store Manager for the Harris Teeter at Stonecrest.

"Support from sponsors such as Harris Teeter & Newman's Own continues to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association serve the local community," said Chris Kirchner, Regional Coordinator. "We are very grateful for our partnership with Harris Teeter. Together we continue to provide hope and healthcare services to local families," added Kirchner.

Harris Teeter and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) have been partners in helping local families fight against neuromuscular diseases for over 7 years. Funds raised by Harris Teeter in the annual Shamrocks Against Dystrophy campaign and through corporate donations have totaled nearly $250,000 to date.
