Harris Teeter Donates Over $230,000 to Area Schools
Together in Education: Children are the winners when shoppers sign up to support their school

Charlotte, NC - Many area schools received a donation that can help children start the New Year off on the right foot. Parents and supporters shopping at Harris Teeter earned $232,977.87 for area schools from August to December through our Together In Education program. Harris Teeter mailed checks to 205 schools in 43 cities and 28 counties. It was the first of three scheduled contributions to be paid out for the 2002-2003 school year.

During the month of January, Harris Teeter is increasing the percentage of sales that go back into schools in the areas we serve. Normally schools earn 2% of profits from sales of private label items, but for this month, Harris Teeter is increasing their contributions to 5%. That could mean big money for area kids!

"Through this program and the support of our loyal customers, we help our local schools bring new technology and equipment into the classrooms and help schools buy much needed supplies," said Fred Morganthall, President of Harris Teeter. In the past four years, participating schools have earned over $3.1 million dollars.

How does Together In Education work? Customers sign up with their VIC card and when they purchase Harris Teeter brand products, a percentage of those purchase dollars goes to the schools of their choice. Shoppers simply link the school of their choice to their VIC card. Families can link up to five schools from preschool through 12th grade and Harris Teeter will evenly distribute the money across the different school accounts.

Money raised from Harris Teeter's Together In Education program enabled the Grimsley High School Band to buy new instruments. "Over the past two years we were able to purchase some very expensive instruments such as trombones, brass tubas, drum equipment, French horns, and even a new computer system to help our young composers," said Gwen B. Varsamis, Fundraising Chairperson for the band.

"Our band is known as one of the finest high school bands in North Carolina. Now we can continue the tradition of excellence thanks to the monies raised by Together In Education," she added.

"The Together In Education program supports our annual fund that allows our teachers to explore their specialties outside the classroom and bring their experiences back to the students to enhance their classroom learning," said Donna Gilbert, Director of Communications for Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. "Last year over 1,000 members of our community linked their VIC card generating nearly $14,000 for our kids," added Gilbert.

With the contributions from Harris Teeter, Providence Day School science teacher Doug Burgess was able to record and document his summer spent chasing storms and tornadoes and bring his first-hand information back to his meteorology students. Fellow history teacher Gordon Bynum was able to purchase an Apple iMovie program for his students. Bynum is blowing the dust off history by allowing his students to make movies using historical events and images and starting a revolution in the way students learn.

St. Thomas More School was able to make "major playground improvements and purchase new equipment" said Marian Cascio, title. "We were also able to remove asbestos from the ceiling and install new light fixtures in the gym," she adds helping to ensure the health and safety of all Thomas More students.

Harris Teeter's generous support of Guilford County Schools goes to fund our Teacher of the Year award, helps with commencement ceremonies, supports the summer Academic all-star Camps as well as Principal of the Year and Rookie Teacher of the Year recognitions," notes Julie Zwahr, with Guilford County Schools.

"Together In Education is fundraising made easy, it's accessible and democratic. It allows the community to be part of the solution," said Ellen Weiner, President of the Page High School PTSA. Even if you no longer have kids in school -- grandparents, extended family members, friends and neighbors can all sign up and help," Weiner adds.

"Over the past three years Page High PTSA has taken advantage of the fundraising opportunity offered by Harris Teeter. Money raised has funded our teacher mini-grant program, purchased lab kits for biology classes, and provided textbooks in Spanish, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and other languages to help children make the transition to our classrooms," said Weiner.

Harris Teeter is proud of our efforts to support area schools and encourages everyone to link their VIC card to their school and "be a part of the solution."
