Harris Teeter places a high value on diversity, as evident in our workforce, our customers and our vendors. As a company committed to diversity in all areas of our operation, we endeavor to build strong relationships with minority and female-owned businesses to provide valuable products and services for our stores, corporate office, warehouses and dairy. We also recognize that diverse suppliers bring knowledge and experience which helps us understand and fulfill our customers’ needs. Moreover, this enhances economic opportunities for suppliers within our communities. With a strong Supplier Diversity Program, Harris Teeter seeks to tap the unlimited potential of minority and female-owned businesses.


About Harris Teeter
Harris Teeter, a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), was co-founded in 1960 by North Carolina grocers W.T. Harris and Willis Teeter and currently operates over 220 stores and one fuel center in eight states and the District of Columbia. The company also operates grocery, frozen food, and perishable distribution and transportation centers in Greensboro and Indian Trail, NC. Additionally, Harris Teeter operates Hunter Farms Dairy, a milk and ice cream facility in High Point, NC. Supplier Diversity Program
Our Supplier Diversity Program is an integral part of Harris Teeter’s corporate initiative to reflect the diverse communities we serve. Supplier Diversity and Community Relations are two of six diversity initiatives implemented by Harris Teeter’s Diversity Advisory Council (DAC). Established in 1997, the DAC is comprised of a group of key management associates, including Harris Teeter President Fred Morganthall, who leads our company in understanding and valuing the differences in our associates, customers and suppliers.

The DAC provides direction to various diversity committees, consisting of a cross section of our management team, including areas such as operations, recruiting, merchandising and loss prevention. In doing so, diversity is channeled throughout Harris Teeter, and not focused on a single level of our organization. The goals of Harris Teeter’s Supplier Diversity program are:

  • To increasingly build relationships with minority and female suppliers in our communities.
  • To provide for the various merchandise and food product needs of our diverse customer base.
  • To do everything we possibly can to foster a continued relationship with successful female and minority businesses where we have experienced a positive business partnership.
  • To make every effort to be involved in minority supplier diversity conferences and trade shows where minority and female companies are represented.

We will continue to build and foster our relationships with diverse community organizations and strengthen our supplier diversity initiative. What Products/Services Does Harris Teeter Buy?
Harris Teeter’s relationships with minority and female suppliers result in $25 million in business annually. We have category managers who are responsible for overseeing our various product lines. The categories include:

Our Expectations
Harris Teeter has an outstanding reputation for offering high quality products at a good value and is known for excellent customer service. To become a Harris Teeter vendor, we expect your company to have a solid history and track record, quality products and a promotional plan. We also strongly suggest that vendors interested in doing business with Harris Teeter take the time to learn about and understand our business so that they will be prepared to address and meet our viable needs. In this regard, vendors will better understand that when compared to our larger competitors, we have considerably fewer stores, different demands, and a significantly smaller budget, etc. and therefore, may not have the same needs as our larger competitors.

In order to serve the needs of our customers, it is essential that vendors meet our expectations as outlined in the Vendor Expectations Guide. The requirements include and are not limited to meeting Harris Teeter Quality Assurance requirements and supply shipping needs. Harris Teeter also requires all new vendors to provide a certificate of insurance. Vendors must also be U.S. citizens or lawfully admitted permanent residents.

To be considered a minority or female owned business enterprise, companies must be at least 51% owned, operated and managed by a person (or persons) of minority descent and belong to at least one of the following ethnic/racial groups:
American Indian or Alaskan Native
Asian Pacific American
Hispanic American
For female-owned businesses, a female must own, control and manage at least 51% of the company. We ask that companies submit proof that they are a certified minority or female-owned organization.

Harris Teeter is a member of the Carolinas’ Minority Supplier Development Council, Inc. (CMSDC), and uses its databases to seek suppliers. If your company is a member of the CMSDC, the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), or the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), please include a copy of your membership certificate.
